Revolutionizing Energy Landscape

Turkey has achieved a remarkable feat in its energy sector. The generation of electricity from solar and wind energy has helped the country save a staggering $12 billion in energy imports last year. This groundbreaking revelation was shared by Halil Demirdağ, CEO of the Association of the Solar Energy Industry (Gensed), at an event in Ankara.

“Most of it flows into the subsidization of imported natural gas for electricity generation. We import natural gas, subsidize it, use it for electricity production and then sell the electricity,” Demirdağ explained.

Subsidies and Financial Impact

The government has allocated an impressive 520 billion Turkish lira for subsidies for imported energy resources this year, providing substantial support for the transition to renewable energy sources. According to Demirdağ, this investment is crucial for reducing Turkey’s dependency on expensive energy imports.

“With energy storage systems, we have reached a point where we can generate electricity at significantly lower costs than with imported natural gas. In the future, storage will play an important role,” he added.

Record Installations and Futures

As of May 2025, Turkey has installed 119,271 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity, with hydropower, natural gas, and coal accounting for 27.1%, 20.6%, and 18.4% respectively. Wind and solar energy hold 11.2% and 19% of the total capacity, indicating a substantial stride toward sustainability.

By the end of 2025, Turkey aims to have 381 wind turbines and 34,010 solar power plants operational, according to data from the Ministry of Energy. This ambitious target underscores the country’s commitment to renewable energy integration.

Evergreen Insights

Turkey’s foray into solar and wind energy not only highlights the financial advantages but also points to a broader trend of global reliance on renewable energy. As a country that has historically relied on fossil fuels, this transition is a significant step toward a more sustainable future.

For businesses and individuals, investing in renewable energy solutions can lead to substantial long-term savings and environmental benefits. With advancements in technology and accessible financing options, now is an ideal time to explore solar and wind energy options.
