DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic was one assist shy of a triple double and the Denver Nuggets beat the Dallas Mavericks 125-114 on Friday to start the new In-Season tournament.

Jokic added 33 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. He made 14 of 16 shots from the field on the Denver court, painted blue and yellow for the occasion.

Michael Porter Jr. scored 24 points, while Jamal Murray had 18 points and 13 assists for the reigning NBA champion Nuggets, who led by 20 points in the third quarter before Dallas pulled within eight late.

Jokic made a layup with 1:11 remaining to end the game.

The Mavs lost for the first time this season — except for the final, the In-Season games are part of the regular season. Luka Doncic finished with 34 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists but had nine turnovers.

Kyrie Irving scored 22 points.
