WMU’s Michael Maloney Named to 2026 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List | College Baseball

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Western Michigan University graduate student Michael Maloney has been recognized as a top shortstop in the nation, earning a spot on the 2026 watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award, the College Baseball Foundation announced Wednesday. The award, named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, honors the nation’s best players at the position.

Maloney’s inclusion on the watch list comes as no surprise given his impressive start to the 2026 season. He’s currently batting .400 with a team-leading 17 RBIs, according to the university. The Mokena, Illinois, native too paces the Broncos in runs scored (14), home runs (4), and slugging percentage (.667). His offensive prowess is complemented by solid defensive play, boasting a .957 fielding percentage and contributing to a Mid-American Conference (MAC)-high 11 double plays.

The Brooks Wallace Award recognizes excellence at shortstop, a position often demanding both offensive production and defensive reliability. The award itself is named in honor of Brooks Wallace, a standout player for Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980, who tragically passed away from leukemia at the age of 27. The College Baseball Foundation will present the award later this year.

Maloney’s performance is a key component of Western Michigan’s early-season success. The Broncos are preparing to initiate conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Akron. The series opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. On Friday.

Western Michigan Baseball celebrated the announcement on social media. WMU Baseball’s official X account congratulated Maloney on being named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list.

The Brooks Wallace Award is one of several prestigious honors in college baseball, recognizing outstanding shortstops nationwide. This year’s watch list includes Tennessee Tech shortstop Owen Lee, who has also demonstrated strong offensive and defensive capabilities, launching three home runs and driving in eight runs, with a .959 fielding percentage and a team-leading 34 assists, as reported by TTU Sports. Other players recognized include Anderson from Alabama A&M University and Kettering, as highlighted by Alabama A&M Sports and Semore Hawks respectively.

As Western Michigan enters conference play, all eyes will be on Maloney to see if he can maintain his impressive form. His performance will undoubtedly be a crucial factor in the Broncos’ pursuit of a MAC championship. The upcoming series against Akron will provide an early test of their conference aspirations.

The Brooks Wallace Award watch list will be updated throughout the season as players continue to demonstrate their skills. The award presentation later this year will recognize the nation’s top shortstop, continuing the legacy of Brooks Wallace and celebrating excellence in college baseball.
