Women Presidents in Latin America: History, Progress, and the Possibility of Mexico’s First Female President in 2024

(CNN Spanish) — In 2024, a woman might become president of Mexico for the first time in the country’s history. Claudia Sheinbaum won the selection process for the candidacy of the ruling Morena party and will face Xóchitl Gálvez, of the opposition alliance Frente Amplio. Unless the independent candidacy of a man is consolidated before the elections, the polls indicate that one of the two will be president. This is an unprecedented event in the country, which might thus be added to the list of Latin American nations that have been or are governed by women.

In 2022, that list of countries with women presidents grew, when Xiomara Castro in Honduras —elected in 2021— and Dina Boluarte in Peru —through constitutional succession following the removal of Pedro Castillo— assumed the head of state of their respective countries. In both cases, it is the first time that a woman has held the position.

At this moment, in the world there are 31 countries where 34 women hold the position of heads of state or government, according to the UN. At the current rate, gender equality in the highest positions of power will only be achieved in 130 years, UN Women calculates.

In our region, the group of countries that have not had women presidents is smaller than the one that has had women rulers, but executive positions are still held mostly and frequently by men.

The countries in Latin America that have not yet had female presidents

Colombia – It currently has a vice president: Francia Márquez.

Cuba

The Savior

Guatemala

Mexico – It might have its first female president in 2024.

Paraguay

Dominican Republic – It currently has a vice president: Raquel Peña.

Uruguay – It currently has a vice president: Beatriz Argimón.

Venezuela – It currently has a vice president: Delcy Rodríguez.

As for the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, it is worth noting that in spain there has not been a female president of the government either and that in USA a woman has never won the presidency. Right now, both countries have female vice presidents: Kamala Harris in the US and Yolanda Díaz in Spain.
