World Cup Race Fiasco: Weather Wreaks Havoc on Men’s and Women’s Downhill Runs in Zermatt-Cervinia

A week following the fiasco surrounding the two canceled men’s downhill runs, the organizers of the World Cup race in Zermatt-Cervinia have now also canceled the first of the two women’s downhill runs.

Once once more the weather thwarted the organizers’ plans for a race on the Swiss Matterhorn. Early on Saturday morning, an attempt was made to buy time by delaying the lift by 45 minutes because the wind did not allow the lift systems to be put into operation.

As the morning progressed, however, it became increasingly clear that the conditions would not allow the descent to take place.

As with the World Cup opener for men’s speed scheduled for last weekend, only one of three training runs has been completed so far, which formally allows the FIS to hold a race.
