Geneva: Confirmed World Health Organization, Wednesday, that deaths novel coronavirus (Covid-19), continues to decline around the world, but it still records “unacceptable” levels, estimated at at least 50,000 per week.

“The number of reported weekly deaths from infection with (Covid-19) continues to decline, and today it is at its lowest level in nearly a year,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press conference from Geneva.

However, the UN official added, “However, (this number) continues to record an unacceptably high level, with nearly 50,000 deaths per week.”

He suggested that “the real number of deaths is higher, pointing out that” Corona deaths are declining in every region of the world except for Europe, where many countries are facing new waves of injuries and deaths.

Ghebreyesus also pointed out that the number of deaths is higher in countries that struggle to obtain vaccines, adding, “56 countries have actually been excluded from the global vaccine market, and were unable to reach the goal of vaccinating 10% of their population by the end of September.”

“Most of these countries are in Africa,” he added, warning of the danger of more countries failing to achieve the goal of vaccinating 40% of their population by the end of this year.

In a related context, the World Health Organization announced the formation of a new advisory board to track the origin of pandemics.

The organization said that the council will help develop guidance for future studies on the origins of pandemics and epidemics and oversee investigations.

The World Health Organization formed the “Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens”, consisting of 26 experts from different countries.

Mike Ryan, director of the organization’s emergencies program, explained that political considerations did not play a role in choosing the scientists who were members of the group. The door was opened to receive comments from Member States on the list until the end of this month.

For his part, the Director-General of the organization said that “understanding the origins of emerging pathogens is necessary to prevent the outbreak of diseases that may lead to an epidemic or pandemic.”
