Yahoo! JAPAN officially ended service access for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom on April 6, 2022, a move that has continued to impact international users more than three years later.
The company cited “operational difficulties in maintaining consistent service quality” as the reason for limiting access to its platforms, according to a recent notice. While the initial announcement in 2022 received limited attention, the ongoing restrictions remain in effect, impacting a substantial European and British user base.
The decision affects all Yahoo! JAPAN services with the exception of limited functionality within Yahoo! JAPAN Mail, ebookjapan, and Yahoo! Card. Users attempting to access services like Yahoo! JAPAN Auctions, weather updates, or mapping features from within the EEA or the UK locate them unavailable. Those with Yahoo! Premium subscriptions were advised to cancel them.
Regulatory hurdles and compliance costs are believed to be central to Yahoo! JAPAN’s decision. While the company has not provided specific details, industry observers suggest the financial burden of adhering to data privacy regulations and online service operation rules within the EEA and the UK proved too substantial. Recent discussions indicate the issue revolves around the expense of complying with regulations governing online services in these areas.
The restrictions apply even to users traveling to the EEA or the UK from Japan, with access to Yahoo! JAPAN services being cut off upon arrival. This has created frustration for individuals relying on the platform while abroad.
Yahoo! JAPAN stated that access remains available for users accessing the services from within Japan itself. The company apologized for the inconvenience, but has not offered a timeline for potential reinstatement of full services. As of February 17, 2026, Yahoo! JAPAN has not commented further on the situation.
