Luzern – Young Boys (YB) claimed a vital 2-1 victory away against Luzern in the 28th round of the Swiss Super League, significantly bolstering their chances of reaching the Championship Group. The win, secured despite playing a large portion of the match against ten men following a red card to Lucas Ferreira of Luzern, moves YB into fifth place in the league standings and extends their lead over their opponents to nine points with five qualifying matches remaining.

The match wasn’t without its drama. Sinan Karweina’s 86th-minute penalty briefly threatened to steal a point for Luzern, but YB held firm to secure a result that could prove pivotal in their season. This victory marks YB’s first away win in seven attempts, a welcome return to form as the season approaches its critical stages.

The turning point of the match arrived in the 41st minute when Lucas Ferreira received his second yellow card, resulting in a red card and leaving Luzern to play with ten men for the remainder of the contest. Ferreira had initially been cautioned in the 25th minute for a tactical foul, and the subsequent dismissal significantly altered the dynamic of the game.

YB capitalized on their numerical advantage early in the second half. Edimilson Fernandes opened the scoring in the 56th minute, though with a degree of misfortune for the hosts as Julian von Moos inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net following a corner kick.

Despite being a man down, Luzern continued to compete, but YB extended their lead in the 79th minute. Darian Males, recently subbed on, fired a shot that was slightly deflected by Adrian Bajrami, and Pascal Loretz, the Luzern goalkeeper, was unable to keep the ball from slipping through his grasp.

The late penalty, converted by Karweina, injected a late dose of tension into the match, but YB’s defense held strong through six minutes of added time to secure the win.

Elsewhere in the Super League, Lausanne defeated FC Zurich 2-1, and Lugano also won 2-1, defeating Sion at home.

Looking ahead, FC Luzern will travel to Lugano on Saturday at 8:30 PM (local time), with the match broadcast live on SRF zwei. Young Boys will then host league leaders Thun on Sunday.

This win for YB represents a significant step towards securing a place in the Championship Group, but coach and players alike will know that continued consistency will be key to achieving their goals. The nine-point cushion over Luzern provides a degree of breathing room, but the remaining five qualifying matches will undoubtedly be fiercely contested.
