In Brazil, the State Health Surveillance Center (Cevs) confirmed on Monday August 7 a case of yellow fever in a howler monkey found already dead in a forest area in June in Saint Anthony of the Missionsin the Missões regionState of Rio Grande do Sul. Along with this case, there are two primate confirmations in 2023 in the state, with the first case identified in January, at Caxias do Sulin the Serra.
Between January and June of this year, 73 primate deaths were reported in 26 municipalities in the state. Of the 66 samples taken, yellow fever cases were only confirmed in Serra Gaúcha earlier this year, and this week in the Missões region. In 2022, no confirmation of the disease has been recorded in Rio Grande do Sul. There have also been no cases of yellow fever in humans in the state since 2009.
The population is called upon to be vaccinated. However, vaccination coverage is almost 100% for the yellow fever virus.
