Yevgeniy Breyger: Russian-Jewish Poet’s Journey from Ukraine to Vienna with Award-Winning Book

He spent the first years of his life growing up as a Russian-speaking Jew in Kharkiv, Ukraine. At the age of ten, Yevgeniy Breyger emigrated to Germany with his parents. The 34-year-old, who has made a name for himself primarily as a poet, has been living in Vienna since the summer. In his book of poems “Peace without War”, which was published in the spring, he spans the period from World War II to the Russian attack on Ukraine. At this year’s Bachmann Prize he read a text regarding a man who, in the waiting room of a hospital, recounted his wartime experiences Grandfather remembered. Tomorrow he will receive the Lavant Prize, worth 15,000 euros.
