Zimbabwe has received cholera drugs and other supplies worth US$265,000 from international organizations, Zimbabwean Minister of Health and Child Welfare Douglas Mombeshora announced on Friday.

Highlighting the high rate of infection among children, he said this aid, including antibiotics and oral rehydration salts, will be aimed at them.

He thanked the Zimbabwe Health Resilience Fund, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UPS Foundation and all partners who contributed to this donation “which will contribute enormously to the management of cholera” .

Among the cases of cholera reported to date, 31% concern people aged under 15, compared to 14% for those under five.

UNICEF recently expressed concern regarding the high rate of infection among Zimbabwean children, noting that one in six new cases of cholera in the country were in children under five and calling for more focus on them as part of the national response to cholera.

According to the Zimbabwean Ministry of Health and Child Protection, the country has recorded, as of January 24, 20,446 suspected cases of cholera since the start of the epidemic in February 2023.

Zimbabwe is set to launch an oral cholera vaccination campaign from Monday, following receiving a first batch of 892,286 doses from the International Coordination Group. F
