On the evening of the 14th local time, an explosion occurred at a coal mine in the Amasra region of the Black Sea coast of northern Turkiye.

There were 110 people working underground at the time of the accident.

People who were close to the ground quickly fled, but people working hundreds of meters underground suffered great damage.

Rescue teams arrived and carried out rescue operations, but 20 people were found dead and 11 people were injured and taken to hospital.

Rescue work was carried out overnight as it was determined that about 10 people were trapped because a tunnel 300 meters underground collapsed due to the explosion.

However, there was a fire in the tunnel and toxic gas was generated, which made rescue work difficult.

The families of the missing people stayed at the scene all night, hoping that they would be alive, but the rescue operation was finished when they were all found dead.

Turkish authorities said 58 of the 110 people escaped or were rescued safely, 11 were injured and 40 died.

Some of the injured are in critical condition, and it is unknown whether the other is alive or dead.

It is presumed that the accident occurred when the methane gas in the tunnel was ignited.

Black smoke from the fire in the tunnel is still rising at the accident site.

In 2014, a coal mine fire in the western Soma region in Turkiye suffered a total of 301 deaths.
