Last year, the European Union and EU 27 member states sold 1.12 million new electric cars, a 28% increase from 2021, AFP reported, citing data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

This corresponds to 12.1% of total new car sales, and is the highest electric vehicle share in the EU’s history, AFP reported.

The share of electric vehicles in the EU new vehicle market rose from 1.9% in 2019 to 9.1% in 2021 before finally breaking 10% last year.

Among EU member states, the country with the highest sales of electric vehicles was Germany, with 470,000 units, up 32% from 2021.

Following Germany, France sold 200,000 electric vehicles, a 25% increase, and Sweden sold 95,000 electric vehicles, a 65% increase.

Gasoline cars sold in the EU last year were 3.37 million units, down 12.8% from a year ago, and diesel cars were 1.52 million units, down 19.7%.

As a result, the market share of gasoline vehicles decreased to 36.4%, and that of diesel vehicles to 16.4%.

However, the combined market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles still exceeds 50%.

In the EU, the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles will be banned from 2035.

In the UK, which has left the European Union, 267,000 electric vehicles were sold last year, a 40% increase from 2021.
