[국제]Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida attends NPT for the first time… Will it break through the sharp drop in approval ratings for the ‘director controversy’?

[앵커]

Prime Minister Kishida is the first Japanese Prime Minister to attend the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the NPT meeting.

It seems that they are working hard on diplomatic achievements, as approval ratings have fallen sharply due to the spread of Corona and the worsening economy, as well as issues with former Prime Minister Abe.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the NPT review meeting in New York, USA until the 26th.

Prime Minister Kishida gave special meaning to the meeting held for the first time in seven years due to the corona crisis as the first Japanese prime minister to attend.

He emphasized that the threat of nuclear weapons has never been greater amid the rapid change in the international situation since the Ukraine crisis.

[기시다 후미오 / 일본 총리 : 핵무기 없는 세계를 목표로 한다는 국제적인 기운이 최근 현저하게 떨어졌습니다. 이런 기운을 반전시키고 다시 한번 북돋우고자 합니다.]

Prime Minister Kishida claims that he is from Hiroshima, the site of the first atomic bombing of mankind.

Following the plan to hold the G7 summit in Hiroshima in May next year, we are also pushing to hold a meeting of the leaders of nuclear disarmament wise men in their hometown in November.

As he has announced that he will leave a ‘nuclear-free world’ as his political legacy, he is working hard on diplomacy for that purpose.

However, the domestic political situation is not easy.

According to a recent Kyodo News poll, the approval rating for the Kishida cabinet fell by more than 10 percentage points, the lowest since its inauguration in October last year.

It is interpreted that the decision to appoint the director without sufficient discussion amid mixed reviews of former Prime Minister Abe caused a backlash.

This is not the only problem.

Conservatives within the LDP are blatantly dissatisfied with the government as the registration of the Sado Mine as a World Heritage Site next year has been canceled.

It is also a bad news that the daily life of ordinary people is getting more difficult due to a surge in prices amid the world’s highest level of spread of the corona virus.

After taking office in October last year, Prime Minister Kishida swept the House of Representatives and the House of Representatives.

Despite the victory in the election, the Prime Minister’s troubles to find the driving force for government are likely to continue in the unusual situation where the approval rating has dropped significantly.
