[그 영화 어때] Seeing the number of viewers for ‘Dune 2’ brings tears to my eyes.

2024-03-13 15:10:00

hello. This is reporter Shin Jeong-seon of the Chosun Ilbo Culture Department. The 51st letter of ‘What do you think of that movie?’ is about the movie ‘Dune: Part 2′. This is a work that makes me very sad these days. Why? The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is to check the number of viewers for a newly released film by going to the Korean Council’s computer network. Why on earth! Is it possible that the audience for an amazing and wonderful work like ‘Dune 2’ is this small? I sigh every morning. Today’s letter is full of my sad feelings.

Are you sad too? I’m sad too. Timothee Chalamet looks serious. I think I checked the number of Korean audiences a while ago.

As I mentioned above, I used to sigh every morning while checking the audience for Dune 2 and wrote an article about it two days ago (excluding the sighing story haha, that’s only in Letter). I’ll put it below the article link.

[아이맥스로만 관객 몰린다, 영화 ‘듄 2′ 국내서 고전하는 이유]

There may be many reasons when a movie does not do well, but I think the poor performance of ‘Dune 2’ was due to a combination of the things I wrote about in the article. ‘Dune 2′ is an incredibly well-made movie. If an audience living in 2024 were to ask, “To what level can Earth’s movies be shown these days?” I would say, “Lift up your eyes and look at Dune.” I saw it at the preview (in the middle of Yongamak Jungbul! I jumped in as soon as the first-come-first-served ticket window opened for the preview…) and fell in love. Oh my, I have to see this again! So I watched it again in Ultra 4DX, again in ScreenX, and again in 2D. (It’s no secret that I couldn’t get tickets to Yongahmaek. Friends, you’re not doing too much by selling out tickets by 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on weekdays.)

I am amazed every time I see it. I saw points that I couldn’t see during my previous visit. So, I bought ‘Dune 1′ as an individual purchase and watched it again. After watching ‘Dune 2’ and then watching ‘Dune 1’, I realized how underrated ‘Dune 1’ was. Director Denis Villeneuve, I am sorry. You’ve had this plan since the first episode, but Sosaeng didn’t even know about it…

After watching it, I was curious about the version made by director David Lynch in 1984, so I watched that too (there is a 3-hour full version on YouTube). Oh, and not just any other director, but Lynch, who was so worried that the audience wouldn’t be able to follow the story that he spent about 10 minutes starting the movie and gave a lengthy explanation while flipping through the drawing board. What era is it, what is Spice, what is Bene Gesserit and blah blah blah. Yes, I understand how you feel. Thanks to you, I also learned more details. It is difficult to compare the Lynch version with the Villeneuve version because it is a 40-year-old film and there is a significant difference in technical level. Still, I think it was only possible because Lynch was a director with his own unique vision and perspective that he was able to show that much at that time.

The more I watched ‘Dune,’ the more I fell in love with it. Before I knew it, I found myself holding a ‘Dune’ mug, buying ‘Dune’-related books, and putting various (useless) goods in my shopping cart (to empty my blind pockets). I will do it. (Wake!)

After feeling bad about my performance in Dune 2, I decided to hire a friend as Maruta a few days ago. I have one question. ‘Will audiences who know nothing about Dune be able to enjoy it when they watch it in a general theater after only hearing basic explanations?’ So, I gave a brief explanation about Dune to my best friend, who only knew Timothée Chalamet, and showed him the regular movie. result?

“Isn’t this really fun?” Ah, how glad I was to hear my friend’s answer. Yes, everyone, the general view is fine. It’s fun even if it’s not IMAX. You just need to know a few basic things. It would be a waste to watch this movie on a monitor in every corner of the house. You must see it in the theater. Take a look when it hangs. please.

But then, shouldn’t I tell you what some of the basics are? Okay, I’ll try my best to recall the version I explained to my friend and write it down below. It looks long if you write it down, but if you recite it with excitement like rap, it’s over right away.

This is the magnificent sandworm attack scene in ‘Dune: Part 2’. Of course, it is more majestic if you see it in IMAX, but you can also see it in a 2D theater. The general building is okay. There are lots of seats. Look, look twice.

(The following is the version I explained to a friend, so I will write it down in informal language.)

“You know, about 8,000 years have passed from now. AI takes over everything. But because machines dominate people too much, people rebel against them. So maximize human brain power. I look at the future and the past. The substance that helps with this is spice, which keeps appearing when you watch movies. If you eat spice, your hair will improve and you will live longer. There is only one planet in the universe that has that spice and that is Dune. It’s the sand planet from the movie.

The sand planet was originally a normal blue planet, but one day sandworms appeared and it changed. In the movies, they look like giant bloated earthworms. They are the bugs. There are natives who ride them like high-speed call taxis, and that native warrior is Zenday. Shalala girlfriend. Among the indigenous people, there are people who believe in the second coming of the Messiah. They believe that they will return the sand planet to a green paradise. It’s the same thing with Lisa Al Join, Quisats Heather Rock, and Madi blah in the movie. Messiah, Savior. The One.

Shalala emerges as a savior. He is the son of a duke, and the duke was killed in the first episode. Because the Emperor wouldn’t listen to him, there was that very fat and dark man, and he got involved with him and killed him. Part 1 ends with Shalala running away with her mother and meeting Zendaya. There is one clumsy warrior who believes in Shalala as his savior. Whenever Shalala speaks to that person, she shouts ‘Lisaan al join!’ and that is the point of the gag. If she said she would join Lisan Al, and if she didn’t say she wouldn’t, she said she wouldn’t join Lisan Al.

The author of the novel argues that the emergence of an absolute person like Shalala who fools the people is dangerous. The idiot warrior embodies that blind faith through comedy. Zendaya warns. It’s a waking voice. Now, when the movie starts, we see how Shalala realizes her own existence and overcomes it. There are three parts to this, so it doesn’t end in part two. Still, the ending of part 2 is good too. “I think it’s the perfect ending to part 3.”

I remember it being roughly explained like this. Once again, I strongly recommend that you not miss the wonderful movie ‘Dune: Part 2’ in the theater. See you in the next letter. thank you
