[사회]Army officer who stole a car while drunk, ‘expires’ after ten days of normal service

[앵커]

Recently, an army officer from the ROTC got drunk and stole a vehicle and was caught by civilians while running away.

Looking at the video from the time of the crime secured by YTN, he was in a state of intoxication and was unable to speak properly.

It turns out that this officer, after being handed over to the military police, served for nearly ten days, and was recently discharged from service.

Is it okay for a military organization where strict discipline is important?

Reporter Kang Min-kyung reports.

A car is lying horizontally in the middle of the road at dawn.

People surrounded it, but the driver did not come out.

Even if you talk repeatedly, the driver just looks ahead without saying a word.

Lieutenant A, who was an active-duty army officer, was the driver who stole a car while intoxicated at the level of revocation of his license.

Lieutenant A stole a car from a convenience store in front of the apartment complex and drove about 500m to this place, and was caught by the residents who followed.

When I caught it, Lieutenant A had even ripped off the wires inside the vehicle that he had stolen to find a charger for his cell phone.

After confirming that Lieutenant A was an active-duty soldier, the police immediately handed over the recruit to the military police.

However, as a result of YTN confirmation, it was confirmed that the military police did not take any special action against Lieutenant A for nearly ten days after the incident.

He committed drunk driving and car theft, but he was working normally.

In the meantime, an official from the military unit to which Lieutenant A belongs made remarks as if asking for mercy and settlement from the victim.

[박현규 / 서울 거여동 : (부대 관계자는 A 중위가) 평소 굉장히 올바른 아이고 임무 수행 능력도 좋았고…좋게 일이 해결되었으면 좋겠다, 잘 좀 봐주시라….]

As time passed without any further disposition, Lieutenant A, an ROTC officer, eventually completed his mandatory service days and was discharged from the military.

An army official said that the process was delayed as the case was repeatedly transferred from the police to the military police and from the wider area to the local district investigation team.

However, it is pointed out that the military officers who committed criminal offenses continued their normal duties without regard to the fact that the military unit is recommending settlements to the victims.

In the case of the police, it is in stark contrast to the fact that an incumbent police officer who committed a similar incident last year was immediately dismissed from office.

It seems that a barracks culture that strictly adheres to the principle of punishment and punishment must be established in order to correct the problem of the ceaseless internal discipline of the military.
