(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = During a visit to Ukraine, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Russia to cooperate in an investigation into war crimes, saying, “War in the 21st century is absurd.”

“This war is evil,” Guterres said to reporters during a visit to Borodianka, a city outside Kiiu, Ukraine on the 28th (local time), according to AFP news agency.

Borodianka is a region suspected of being the site of the massacre of civilians by the Russian army.

“I imagine my family’s house being destroyed and blackened,” Guterres said. “I imagine my granddaughters running away in terror.”

“In the 21st century, war is irrational, and this war is evil itself,” he said. “There is no way to accept war in the 21st century.”

Afterwards, Guterres visited the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a secondary office investigating the allegations of civilian massacre by the Russian military and insisted that the Russian government actively cooperate with the ICC’s investigation.

“I fully support the ICC and urge the Russian government to cooperate with the ICC,” he said. “We must not forget that the worst crime is war itself.”

Guterres arrived in Ukraine the evening before after meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on the 26th.

He is scheduled to hold a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after seeing the devastation of areas occupied and withdrawn by Russian forces such as Borodianka and Bucha on that day.

Russian forces are suspected of genocide of civilians in occupied areas on the northern front near Kiiu.

In Bucha, a city on the outskirts of Kiiu, a mass burial site where more than 50 bodies were buried at once was confirmed, and among them, a body with a gunshot wound to the back of the head with hands tied behind the back was also found.

In this regard, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has started an investigation into war crimes in secondary places, but Russia has completely denied the allegations of genocide.
