“After watching episode 1 or 2, it was regrettable that it ended with episode 16 because the material was amazing. There was controversy in the beginning, but I had faith in the writer. In fact, the viewership ratings went up gradually and went up in the second half. It was also regrettable that it would have gone up even more if it had been a 20-episode series.”
Actor Han Ga-gam (43) spent a lot of time preparing for the TV Chosun weekend drama ‘Mistress Durian’. It is said that he researched the unique way of speaking of a writer who is “famous for not making a single mistake” while working on Im Seong-han (pen name Phoebe)’s previous work, “Wedding Lyricist, Divorce Composition.”
He was prepared, but when he received the first script, he looked back and said, “It was helpless.” He told the behind-the-scenes story, saying, “I suffered a lot because of my hair.”
“He sent me a picture of Mrs. Kim Kun-hee when she had short hair. They specifically designated it, so I styled it with that motif, but I had a lot of worries because it’s a hairstyle that I don’t often do these days. Personally, she was a little worried as she had never been with her short hair before. It was awkward at first, but as time passed, it stabilized. Handagam played ‘Lee Eun-seong’, the second daughter-in-law of the Dan family in the play. “I have a very positive personality, and when I do something, I tend to absorb it quickly, but when I received the script, I was like, ‘Oh my god. It was really difficult. ‘Director, does this make sense?’ I did not understand. They say things that I would never have imagined while gaslighting. Those gods were a bit difficult. It’s not a scene that could have been acted out with enough emotion, but it’s because it’s persuading them through gaslighting. It was a god that shouldn’t be out of breath.”
‘Missis Durian’ was a series of shocking episodes, such as the daughter-in-law confessing “I love you” to her mother-in-law, and the president of a chaebol deciding to marry a director 30 years younger than him in two days. However, the actors took the filming seriously without wavering even with the sometimes absurd lines that would make them laugh, and immersed themselves in expressing each and every line of writer Im Seong-han. Director Shin Woo-chul even said, “This is the first time on a set where the actors are so good and the staff are so enthusiastic.”
He had many scenes with his husband, Kim Min-joon. He said, “I got along so well with Min-jun oppa (from the first shoot) and gave him high-fives like real men.” “At the end of the shoot, I was moved by the fact that Chigam sent a text message saying, ‘I will apologize to Eunseong.’”

“I didn’t know if I would go back to the past either (laughs). I thought it would end in the present life. I think Eunseong is sensitive and like an opinionated woman, but she is a good woman, and in that respect, I think her husband will understand her for going back to her previous life. Of course you will get angry and get a fever. I think you will understand and accept it. After that, she wouldn’t have just been a dog mother. But she thinks it doesn’t make sense from Hangam’s point of view. Why airplane mode? While empathizing, ‘Does it make sense?’ I thought about that a lot (laughs).”
It’s been 24 years since I knew it. “I consider myself a blessed person,” he said, “I still get strength because there are places that call me.”
“In the meantime, I’ve played candy-like roles and many other roles, but the ripple effect was the strongest when I played an urban role. In the past, there were times when I didn’t like seeing (images) in a biased way, but I thought it would be okay to make sure I was in my own area. Whether it’s a movie or a drama, I thought it wouldn’t be bad to take a character that I can play exclusively.”
After changing her name from ‘Han Eun-jung’ to ‘Ha-gam’ three years ago, she is living a second life in acting and said, “Now is the time to compete with your acting skills.”
“I don’t even look in the mirror anymore. I don’t think it’s time for acting to be more important than what’s shown. In the past, if I had a strong thought of ‘I want to do something like this next time’, now I want to show a different charm and a different color even if I take on a similar character. I still have a lot of energy.”
