[전국]Growing sense of crisis in the industry…Government-cargo union resumes negotiations today

[앵커]

The strike by the cargo unions is expected to bring about a logistics crisis throughout the domestic industry from this week.

The government and the cargo union are scheduled to hold negotiations in two weeks today, but difficulties are expected due to the large difference in opinions between the two sides.

Busan New Port is quiet with a noticeable decrease in the number of trucks coming in and out.

Busan Port, including Busan New Port, is the core of port logistics, accounting for about 70% of all container imports and exports in Korea.

On the 4th day of the strike, the amount of containers in and out of Busan Port was reduced to one-fifth of the usual.

The volume of goods transported in 12 major ports across the country is lower than this.

As the shipment rate of cement and steel materials is less than 10% of the usual, the suspension of work at ready-mixed concrete companies and construction sites is becoming visible.

There are also disruptions in the individual consignment of finished car makers, and the oil refinery industry is also concerned that it will be difficult to supply supplies to front-line gas stations if the strike is prolonged.

The Cargo Solidarity is demanding the abolition of the sunset system of the ‘Safe Freight System’ and increasing the number of applicable items to five.

It is to guarantee the minimum transportation fee that guarantees the survival rights of truck drivers.

Regarding this, the government has already promised a three-year extension for cement and containers, and the position is that the expansion of applicable items needs discussion and must be agreed at the National Assembly.

In the midst of this, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Cargo Solidarity are negotiating for the first time since the strike.

However, difficulties are expected as the positions of both sides are running parallel.

With the cargo union strike expected to materialize into a logistics crisis across the industry from this week, attention is focused on what solutions the union and the government can come up with.
