???? Could cheese consumption have an impact on our cognitive functions?

The quality and variety of our diet impacts our health in general, as numerous research has already demonstrated. A recent study looked at the specific effects of cheese consumption on our cognitive functions.

Researchers from the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute recently published the results of their study on the subject in the scientific journal Nutrients. According to their research, regular consumption of cheese among older people would help preserve their good cognitive health. However, their study has some limitations.

To reach this conclusion, scientists studied health data from 1,516 Japanese people aged 65 and over. Among this population, approximately 8 out of 10 people consumed cheese (daily for 27.6%, once every two days for 23.7% and once or twice a week for 29.7%).

The tests carried out demonstrated an association between cheese consumption and the absence of a decline in cognitive functions occurring with age. To test these cognitive functions, they used the Folstein test, well known in this field to screen for senile dementia. This test consists of measuring cognitive health via several criteria such as orientation (In the literal sense, orientation designates or materializes the direction of the Orient (sunrise…), attention, language, or memory (Generally speaking, memory is the storage of information. It is also recollection…) in particular. Result: the participants consuming cheese presented a better score than the others.

However, these observations should be moderated because the researchers also found that the group of people who usually consumed cheese also had a significantly more diversified diet than the other group. Thus, these initial results do not really allow us to conclude that the nutrients contained in cheese alone are the cause of the lack of decline in their cognitive health. Perhaps the latter is simply due to their varied diet.

However, previous studies have already made the link between cheese consumption and brain health. Despite the uncertainty we may have, the researchers confirm that to date they have not identified any other plausible reason for the improvement in cognition. Thus, for them and despite the other foods, even if it is still necessary to deepen this research, only cheese would seem to be associated with this effect. They even specify that certain cheeses should be favored to further improve these benefits. These mainly concern hard cheeses, which have the particularity of presenting higher levels of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant biomarkers. This would come from glutathione (Glutathione is a tripeptide, formed by the condensation of glutamic acid,…), particularly present in cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère or Emmental for example.
