???? For the first time, an AI automatically detects a supernova, and much more…

The discovery of a supernova has just marked a world first. Not only because of its cosmic importance, but above all because it was identified by a fully automated process, using unprecedented artificial intelligence (AI).

This new system, developed by an international collaboration led by Northwestern University, automated from start to finish, eliminates human error in research. ) new supernovae. The team recently launched a time-saving tool called Bright Transient Survey Bot (BTSbot). a concept developed by human beings to understand the…) precious. Adam Miller and Nabeel Rehemtulla of Northwestern University are the principal architects. The phenomenon of supernovae is of particular interest to researchers. These stellar explosions release chemical elements into space such as carbon, iron and gold. The BTSbot was trained from 1.4 million images to recognize supernovae and eliminate false alarms.

To validate the BTSbot, the researchers studied the recently discovered supernova, named SN2023tyk. After confirming it as a Type Ia supernova, the automated system publicly shared this discovery on October 7.

Nabeel Rehemtulla sums up the team’s general feeling well: once everything is working, “we’re effectively doing nothing. We go to sleep at night and when we wake up we see BTSbot and these other AIs doing their job over and over once more.”
