In their article entitled “Positive impact of sleep on recall of multiplication facts,” published in the journal Royal Society Open Scienceresearchers explored the effect of sleep on memorizing complex multiplication problems. The study involved 77 adults aged 18 to 40, all from the United Kingdom. Each participant was presented with complex multiplication problems in two different scenarios: before sleep and upon waking. The online sessions included timed and untimed trials, where they learned new operations or were tested on previously learned material.

The results reveal better memorization among participants who learned before sleeping. This improvement remained even among participants with varying learning abilities, although the effect was smaller. Participants’ mathematical competence, as assessed by accuracy in solving simple multiplication problems, was related to learning scores, but not to sleep’s effectiveness on memorization.

This study highlights the potentially positive impact of sleep on learning, particularly for children learning multiplication tables or other memorable mathematical skills. However, welcoming a lesson math before bed remains to be determined…

The authors suggest that sleep may provide an additional memorization advantage over daytime learning, perhaps due to the reduction in external stimuli that would promote information encoding.
