1.3 million visitors: a record at the Belvedere

By the end of the year, 1.3 million visitors are expected at the Upper Belvedere, 60 percent more than last year. This makes it “currently the most visited art museum in Austria,” it was said at a press conference on Tuesday. Including the Lower Belvedere and Belvedere 21 locations, around 1.8 million visitors are expected by the end of the year. The frontrunner so far was 2019 with more than 1.7 million entries.

The rush causes spatial problems, especially in the entrance area – which is why a new “Visitor Center” has been planned for a long time, for which the federal government gave the green light this year. The implementation of the new entrance hall is expected to take an 18-month planning and submission phase and an equally long construction period. The opening is scheduled for 2028.

In 2024, the show “In the Eye of the Storm. Modernisms in Ukraine” will be on view at the Lower Belvedere, announced artistic director Stella Rollig. It is the “most comprehensive presentation of Ukrainian art from the early to mid-20th century shown outside of Ukraine.”
