Played well for a long time, also led, only to be left empty-handed at home again – 1. FC Magdeburg suffered their sixth defeat of the season against FC St. Pauli in the MDCC Arena.

1. FC Magdeburg has to wait for their first home win since October 2, 2022. In front of 24,287 spectators in the MDCC Arena, head coach Christian Titz’s team lost 2-1 (1-0) against FC St. Pauli, who were still without points in the new year. The blue and whites had the game under control for a long time and gave it up in the final quarter of an hour.

Atik rewards powerful FCM

FCM went into the second home game of the new year with Tim Sechelmann, who was last allowed to play from the start on matchday 3, instead of Silas Gnaka in central defense. Sechelmann and his defensive colleagues should work up a sweat in the first quarter of an hour. Connor Metcalfe and Marcel Hartel (13th/14th) gave the Hamburg team the lead within barely 60 seconds.

St. Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj stretches in vain – Baris Atik’s lob shot too accurately and puts the FCM in the lead.

Moritz-Broni Kwarteng’s shot from 17 meters after a quick counterattack, which FCSP keeper Nikola Vasilj fished out of the corner with one hand (17′), marked the start of Magdeburg’s continued dominance. Baris Atik rewarded his team with a wonderful chip from 15 meters into the far corner (39th).

Castaignos missed – then Irvine climbs up

With the restart, St. Pauli struggled, but FCM defended well organised, aggressively in duels and set promising pinpricks. Mohammed El Hankouri’s free shot from the turn lacked precision (52′), but at the latest Luc Castaignos, who had just come on as a substitute, had the second exclamation mark on his foot – Tatsuya Ito and Atik prepared with a fine combination before Castaignos on Vasilj, who again brilliantly parried failed (65th).

But the guests showed up. Maurides threw himself over the crossbar from six meters (72′). Jackson Irvine’s picture-perfect header after Leart Paqarada’s corner then started the turnaround to the disadvantage of Sachsen-Anhalt (74′). And it got even more bitter for the promoted team: Castaignos’ lost ball after the guest free-kick had already been clarified, allowing Marcel Hartel to dribble inwards, who then opened the crucial gap in the FCM penalty area with a plug-in pass – Jakov Medic then kept it alone in front of goalkeeper Dominik Reimann nerves and sealed the defeat shortly before the end of regular time (88th).
