The American Heart Association (AHA) is launching a new continuing education initiative focused on the intersection of cardiology and OB-GYN, bolstered by a $1 million donation from Dr. Jennifer Ashton, a media personality specializing in health, and her husband, Tom Werner.
The donation will support the development of educational resources designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women, particularly during and after pregnancy. Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of maternal mortality, and the AHA aims to address gaps in knowledge and care within both cardiology and obstetrics-gynecology.
Dr. Ashton, a board-certified physician, and Werner’s contribution comes as the AHA increases its focus on women’s health. The initiative seeks to equip healthcare professionals with the latest research and best practices for managing cardiovascular risk factors unique to women, including those related to pregnancy.
Taylor Swift also recently contributed $1 million to the AHA, honoring her father, Scott Swift, following his bypass surgery. This separate donation underscores a broader trend of high-profile support for the organization’s cardiovascular health programs.
The AHA has also clarified recent reports regarding a donation from Procter & Gamble, confirming that the amount was different than initially reported. The organization continues to accept donations to support its various initiatives.
The AHA’s “Go Red for Women” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about heart disease in women, continues to operate alongside this new educational initiative. The AHA has not yet announced a specific launch date for the cardiology-OB-GYN continuing education program, but plans are underway to commence development immediately.
