Northern Latvia has officially launched a network of ten gastronomic tourism routes titled “Ziemeļzeme kods,” or “Code of the Northern Lands,” spanning the Northern Vidzeme region to connect travelers directly with local farms, home producers, and artisanal tasting experiences. Designed for one-day car excursions, the initiative merges culinary discovery with natural, cultural, and historical landmarks across the countryside, aiming to boost local small business visibility and manage a growing influx of international visitors.

Bridging the Gap Between Rural Producers and International Palates
The project manager Ineta Andersone, noted that the core objective of the network is to forge a direct economic and cultural bridge between small-scale regional producers and consumers. According to Andersone, the developmental blueprint for these routes drew inspiration from established gastronomic tourism frameworks used in Estonia, Austria, and Finland. Among the enterprises featured on the trail is a chocolate factory in Trikāta, which has seen a notable surge in foot traffic this season.
Raisa Jablonska, founder of the Trikāta chocolate factory, reported that approximately half of the visitors touring the facility this summer arrived from outside Latvia, with Estonian nationals making up a particularly large share of the demographic.
Weaving Farm Tastings with Sandstone Cliffs and Historic Rail Lines
While food serves as the anchor for the “Ziemeļzeme kods” initiative, Toms Treimanis, head of the Valmiera region tourism administration, emphasized that the itineraries are explicitly multidisciplinary. The routes weave together culinary stops with visits to prominent natural and historical locations. Travelers traversing the network can easily pair a farm tasting with walks along the striking nature trails of Sietiņiezis sandstone cliff or the historic hilltop of Zilaiskalns. For cyclists, a dedicated route runs along the path of the former “Green Railway” toward Limbaži, turning disused industrial history into an active recreation corridor.

Treimanis also pointed out that the widening appeal of Northern Vidzeme has drawn a diverse mix of tourists from Finland, Poland, and Germany. Many of these travelers arrive via non-traditional transit modes, including camper vans, bicycles, or on foot. This shift toward independent, slow travel has placed new demands on municipal infrastructure, highlighting a regional need for expanded facilities capable of handling camper van waste disposal and electrical hookups.
