Heavy rains continued to pound Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture on Sunday (22/9). The impact of the flooding has also left 10 people missing.
As reported by Anadolu, Monday (23/9), with an emergency warning issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency, authorities said that one person died and 10 others were still missing on Saturday after heavy rains in the Noto peninsula.
More than 360 millimeters (14.1 inches) of rain was recorded in Wajima and 260 mm (10.2 inches) in Suzu city by Sunday morning, prompting authorities to launch rescue operations and searches for missing people in the Noto area. The downpours also triggered river flooding and landslides, cutting off roads and isolating many communities.
Highways and roads were closed in several areas due to heavy rain. Authorities warned that the powerful Jan. 1 earthquake that rocked the Noto region had increased the risk of landslides even if there was little rain.
It was the heaviest rain the area has seen since comparative records became available. “The number of people missing in the city has reached 10,” Wajima Mayor Shigeru Sakaguchi said.
