Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22, marking the formal consecration of the deity in the newly constructed temple.
The ceremony involved the installation of a 51-inch idol of Ram Lalla, carved from black stone, in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum. The ritual was conducted according to Vedic traditions, with the Prime Minister leading the prayers and offerings before the deity. The event was attended by a curated list of guests, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, various state governors, chief ministers, and prominent religious leaders from across India.
Legal and Administrative Framework
The construction of the temple followed a 2019 Supreme Court of India verdict that resolved a decades-long legal dispute over the land. The court awarded the site to a trust, the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra, for the construction of the temple while mandating the allotment of an alternative five-acre plot to the Muslim parties involved in the litigation.

The trust oversaw the architectural planning and execution of the project, ensuring the structure adhered to the Nagara style of temple architecture. The temple is constructed primarily from pink sandstone sourced from Rajasthan, avoiding the use of iron or steel in the main structure to enhance its longevity.
Architectural and Structural Details
The temple complex spans a significant area and features three floors, with a total height of approximately 161 feet. The design incorporates numerous carved pillars and ceilings depicting various scenes from the Ramayana and traditional Indian motifs. The sanctum sanctorum, where the idol is placed, is designed to allow for the visibility of the deity while maintaining the sanctity of the inner shrine.
Logistical preparations for the consecration involved a massive security operation. Thousands of security personnel, including paramilitary forces and local police, were deployed across Ayodhya to manage crowds and secure the perimeter of the temple complex. Airspace restrictions were implemented over the city for the duration of the ceremony to ensure the safety of the high-profile attendees.
Institutional Coordination
The event required coordination between the Uttar Pradesh state government and the central government to upgrade the city’s infrastructure. This included the expansion of the Ayodhya airport and the development of new road networks to accommodate the anticipated influx of pilgrims. The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust remained the primary authority responsible for the temple’s internal management and the conduct of the rituals.

Following the conclusion of the Pran Pratishtha, the temple administration transitioned to managing public access. The trust has established protocols for devotee entry and the scheduling of aarti services to prevent overcrowding within the temple premises.
The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust continues to oversee the final stages of the surrounding complex’s development, while the specific daily schedule for public darshan remains under the jurisdiction of the temple’s appointed priests.
