Unveiled during the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation in Germany, MBC Game Studio introduced its debut action-adventure title, 1,001 Threads of Mizan (also referenced in announcements as 1001 Threads of Mazin). Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund-owned MBC Group and led by industry veterans, the cooperative project adapts the iconic Middle Eastern folk tale collection for platforms including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, choosing broad cultural folklore over singular legendary heroes like Aladdin or Sinbad.
Engineering a Multi-Platform Co-Op Experience
Led by CEO Daniel Engelhardt, a former gaming executive for Lionsgate, and COO Trevor Williams, the studio opted for drop-in, drop-out three-player cooperative mechanics designed around high-speed traversal.
At the core of the project is a dedicated flying carpet gameplay system. According to studio descriptions, this movement mechanic serves as the primary engine for traversal, allowing players to navigate the world and engage jinn of colossal scale together. Delivering this across Sony’s architecture, Microsoft’s consoles, PC hardware configurations, and Nintendo’s successor platform (referred to in industry announcements as the Switch 2) requires optimization.
The studio assembled a global team drawing from veteran talent pools at BioWare, Hi-Rez, Ubisoft Montréal, and Bungie to tackle these hurdles. Yet, the technical execution is intertwined with local cultural authenticity.
Integrating Regional Folklore Into the Core Design Stack
Rather than treating cultural source material as an afterthought or a surface-level skin, MBC Game Studio embedded regional expertise directly into its design. Engelhardt noted that the development process bypassed traditional external consulting models by hiring folklore experts and literary historians as core members of the world and narrative teams.
One departmental lead is a scholar who earned her master’s degree at UC Berkeley, while another heading the department is a literary PhD and historian who previously taught classes on One Thousand and One Nights at UCLA. These researchers play a material role in shaping the vision for the game across the mechanics, the world, the narrative, and art.
“Some of the earliest hires were artists in the region,” Engelhardt explained, pointing to specific asset designs like a fallen jinn model featured in the initial public demo that originated directly from regional concept artists.
Shifting Away From Monolithic Legends
The narrative framework utilizes the classic frame story of ruler Shahryar receiving nightly tales from his wife Scheherazade to delay her execution. However, the game deliberately sidesteps hyper-familiar tropes associated with Western adaptations of Arabic folklore.
Instead of leading with legendary archetypes like Aladdin, Ali Baba, or Sinbad, 1,001 Threads of Mizan introduces three original protagonists: Yusra, Malik, and Sufyan. These characters embark on a cooperative quest to rediscover the lost power of the Mizan and neutralize an ancient jinn king before his vengeance threatens humanity. By decentralizing the narrative away from a single heroic template, the studio aims to tap into the sprawling, episodic oral storytelling traditions of the region.
“From day one, one of the things that was really important to us was ‘1,001 Arabian Nights’ has been around for a long time, and it is not a singular story, it’s a collection of stories and it’s a collection of stories that were built that was taken up over years,” Engelhardt stated, emphasizing the project’s broad scope as a launchpad for deeper exploration of Arabic folklore.
Platform Availability and Deployment Timeline
Announced during the trade event in Germany, the title marks a milestone for MBC Group’s push into interactive entertainment, backed by the financial weight of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. By targeting an expansive hardware matrix—spanning Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and PC ecosystems—the studio is positioning its debut project for global reach. As development continues past its Gamescom reveal, the engineering and narrative teams face the ongoing task of harmonizing high-speed aerial co-op mechanics with a faithful, multi-vocal tribute to centuries of oral tradition.
