ATHENS (AP) — The Greek Coast Guard found a group of 14 migrants and the body of a man washed up on the shore of a small island in the eastern Aegean on Tuesday, authorities said.
The group, made up of five men, six women and three minors, was on the remote island of Farmakonisi, next to the body of another man. The cause of his death was not immediately clear.
The migrants appeared to have landed on the island following setting off from the Turkish coast in an inflatable raft that sank, the coast guard said. No disappearances were reported. Those rescued and the deceased were transferred to the nearby island of Leros, authorities added.
Greece, which is part of the European Union, has seen a surge in arrivals by sea of people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia and seeking a better life in the wealthy 27-nation bloc.
Despite the increase in migration through Greece, Italy remains the main point of entry into the EU, with around 114,200 arrivals so far this year. Spain is behind with more than 21,000, according to United Nations figures, and Greece accumulates close to 18,600.
