Felixander Solis-Guzman, of Lakeland, was taken into custody about 5 minutes after officers patrolling New Smyrna Beach witnessed the incident Thursday afternoon.

Around 3:45 p.m., officers heard a crowd shouting and then dispersing with people shouting “He’s got a gun.” Officers ran to the scene and saw the suspect holding a handgun. When ordered to drop the gun, he fled, holding it and running through a crowd before heading towards the sea and throwing the gun into the water along with a bag he was carrying.

Felixander surrendered to officers around 3:50 p.m. and no injuries were reported during the incident.

Officers retrieved both the gun and the bag from the water. The bag contained 20 small plastic bags of marijuana.

The youth was charged with assault on a police officer, possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18, unlawful display of a firearm, 2nd degree felony with a weapon, resisting an officer and 2 counts of tampering with evidence.
