With this result, the 17-year-old swimmer could take gold at the World Championships.

Russian swimmers are not going to go to the Games in Paris, but this does not mean that they cannot please fans with excellent results this season. At the Russian Championships in Kazan, 17-year-old Miron Lifintsev made a loud statement about himself: the young athlete won gold, left no chance for his star rivals, and at the same time set a new junior world record.

This guy could definitely make some noise at the Olympics!

Showdown in Kazan

On April 14, the Russian swimming championship started in Kazan, and on Monday, April 15, fans witnessed several final swims. It was impossible to ignore the showdown in the women’s 50-meter breaststroke, where star champion Yulia Efimova and world record holder Evgenia Chikunova fought for victory, and gold eventually went to British native Tatyana Belonogoff.

Another fundamental duel was expected among the men’s spin athletes in the 100-meter dash: the current Olympic champion at this distance, Evgeny Rylov, planned to fight with the current Olympic vice-champion, Kliment Kolesnikov.

It must be admitted that 27-year-old Rylov showed far from his best seconds and, with a result of 53.13 seconds, reached the finish line only in fifth. Kolesnikov was also far from a personal best, but still won a medal. The result of 52.8 seconds at the finish allowed the planet record holder and six-time European champion to take silver at the national championship. Bronze was won by Dmitry Savenko (52.9), and gold went to 17-year-old Miron Lifintsev, for whom this is the first serious achievement at the adult level.

Miron not only won the national championship and beat the famous Kolesnikov and Rylov, but at the same time set a world record among juniors – 52.34. The previous one (52.53), by the way, belonged to Kolesnikov and was established in 2018 at the European Championships in Glasgow.

“What happened, happened”

The young swimmer surprisingly calmly accepted his success, and did not feel any special emotions about the world record.

“I expected anything, even better, but what happened, happened.” I won’t say that the goal was directly to set a junior world record, but what happened, happened. The fact that he overtook Clement is somehow more prestigious. You can’t relax until the end of the competition, there’s a lot to do, I have a lot of work,” Match TV quotes Lifintsev.

Let’s hope that Miron’s best results are still ahead, but even with his current results, he could qualify for world championship gold in 2024. American Hunter Armstrong won the gold medal with more modest seconds (52.68), which once again speaks of the value of such “victories” in the absence of the Russians. By the way, even Rylov with the fifth result at the domestic Russian level in Qatar could qualify for a medal.

In the summer, as you know, the best Russian swimmers will not be in Paris, but they are here and now in Kazan. The tournament will end only on April 19, which means fans still have the opportunity to watch athletes who are no worse than future Olympians.

The Russian swimming championship will end in Kazan on April 19. Watch live broadcasts of the tournament on the Match holding channels and on the websites matchtv.ru and sportbox.ru.
