The space clinic in Toulouse, in Occitanie, is preparing future flights to the Moon or Mars. To do this, she is conducting a 60-day experiment on twelve male volunteers, who must remain bedridden. Explanations.
Earn tens of thousands of euros in lying down, it’s possible. Twelve volunteers have indeed agreed to be bedridden for 60 days to help with space research, in Toulouse, in Haute-Garonne.
Preparing for future space flights
The purpose of this experiment, conducted by Medes, the Institute for Space Medicine and Physiology, is to prepare for spaceflight to come, in “assessing how the body adapts to 60 days of simulated weightlessness“, explains Marine Bernat, head of communication at Medes, to our colleagues from West France.
The body is here tilted at 6 degrees (the head lower than the feet) to reproduce the effects of weightlessness on the body. Even lying down, the twelve volunteers can read, use a computer, use their arms, like an astronaut in flight who will find points of support in the international space station.
Some are also subjected to a certain number of tests, blood, urine, psychological… and exercises: riding a bike, but lying down, or taking a spin in a centrifuge… Always lying down! In any case, for some of the volunteers.
“You can have a headache, but for me, it’s especially the back”, explains Cyprien, one of the participants to the journalists of France 3 Occitania.
At the end of the experience, the brave pocket 18,000 euros, which will be paid in installments of 4,500 euros over 4 years. It is the law that limits the amount you can earn to participate in clinical trials, recalls The Parisian.
