1860 Munich: DFB Boosts Youth Funding – But Promotion is Priority

by

The German Football Association (DFB) will significantly increase funding for talent development, but TSV 1860 Munich may find themselves in the unusual position of not wanting the extra money. The DFB announced it will raise the amount allocated to the Nachwuchsfördertopf (youth development fund) from three to five million euros, though, the increased funding will not take effect until the 2026/27 season.

The timing is less than ideal for 1860 Munich, who, after a recent run of five consecutive victories, have re-entered the promotion race. A return to the 2. Bundesliga would be a far more lucrative outcome than relying on the youth development fund.

Should promotion to the second tier ultimately prove elusive, however, a substantial financial boost awaits the club in the second half of 2027. 1860 Munich is widely recognized for its strong youth development program and has consistently been one of the largest beneficiaries of the fund in recent years.

In the past season, the club received approximately 255,000 euros from the fund. In 2022/23, the amount was even higher, reaching 647,000 euros, and in the 2021/22 season, 448,000 euros were allocated to 1860 Munich. Established in 2018, the Nachwuchsfördertopf aims to support clubs in maintaining youth performance centers and fostering the development and integration of German players under the age of 21.

The DFB’s financial increase is accompanied by changes to the criteria used to distribute the funds. The allocation will now be based on four key parameters: the quality of the youth performance center, the club’s overall youth development program, the number of players representing German youth national teams, and the playing time given to young players. Specifically, the amount of playing time afforded to young talents in the 3. Liga will be given greater weight in the distribution of funds.

TSV 1860 has been actively integrating youth players into the first team this season. Defender Sean Dulic has become a regular starter, featuring in every league match until a recent muscle injury sidelined him. Clemens Lippmann is also seeing consistent playing time, and Lasse Faßmann recently made his starting debut for the club in a match against Viktoria Köln.

The integration of young players is a priority for Managing Director and Head of the Youth Academy, Manfred Paula, and club President Gernot Mang. Mang cited a lack of commitment to youth development as a key factor in the dismissal of former coach Patrick Glöckner and former Managing Director Christian Werner.

Under current coach Markus Kauczinski, the club has demonstrably increased its focus on youth players. However, the club would reportedly prefer to achieve promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, which would bring significantly increased revenue – estimated to rise from approximately 1.5 million euros in the 3. Liga to around 7.5 million euros in the 2. Bundesliga – rather than relying on the funds from the DFB.
