1h of mix by Argentinian Thomass Jackson and Mexican Theus Mago

On the occasion of the release of their joint EP El Vaneo on HARD FIST RecordsArgentinian Thomass Jackson and the mexican Theus Mago deliver 1 hour of podcast

Introduce yourself and your musical / DJ background in a few lines?

Thomass Jackson : My name is Thomass Jackson and I am a self-taught producer and DJ who has been involved in the electronic scene in one way or another since 1998. First in Buenos
Aires, in Argentina, where I am originally from, then in Mexico, where I now live.

Theus Mago : I am Mateo Gonzalez aka Theus Mago aka Bufi. I am a Mexican producer and DJ and a former professional manipulator.

What state of mind were you in when you recorded this podcast?

Thomass Jackson : I was in a good mood and enjoying the sun of Puerto Escondido on the coast of Oaxaca.

Theus Mago : I was in a neutral mood. Too many Instagram pics, of Thomass enjoying life.

When would be the best time to listen to it?

Thomass Jackson & Theus Mago : Any time, but an after party in an abandoned WWII Soviet bunker would be the best time to listen to it.

Which artists / labels did you select and why?

Thomass Jackson : It’s a selection of tracks from the 90s and early 2000s. We’ve been digging into those sounds a lot lately, because it was bubbling with originality… It was a time of change in music. There are also things to come on Calypso Records (editor’s note : son label).

You are two major players in the South American psychedelic electronic scene. How do you see this scene and its evolution in recent years in terms of electronic music?

Thomass Jackson & Theus Mago : We are happy to see more and more new producers and labels with great ideas being added to the South American panorama. Before, it was a region dominated by DJs who did not create original music, but we are still far from a healthy and efficient workplace. We try to push that sound into areas it hasn’t gone before, and sometimes it’s not that easy.

Did you use instruments typical of this scene in your composition process?

Thomass Jackson : We try to free ourselves from the codes. We use what we have on hand and we try to make it sound like we hear it in our heads.

How did you compose the EP? Is it more difficult to compose an EP as a duo?

Thomass Jackson & Theus Mago : We started the structure of the title ‘The deer‘ about 6 years ago when we first met in person to make music in my studio.

We then became friends, and long after, in 2019, we started jamming at Theus’ studio to create the debut of the other three songs. Then we worked remotely to finish them. I don’t think it was difficult working together, but in general it can be more difficult, especially if you are used to working alone.

What are your next news?

Thomass Jackson : I have 2 new EPs on Multi Culti coming soon, a track on Opium’s club compilation and lots of remixes and edits. I’m also going to do some events here on the Oaxaca coast in Mexico and in Mexico City with my label Calypso Records. And finally, I will travel more to do dates around the world.

Theus Mago : I have an EP coming soon with Catz & Dogz, another with Curses, a track with Adam Port and a few other releases on Duro, my own label. There is also a European tour scheduled for next summer.
