Au Canada, stroke (CVA) is the third leading cause of death. It occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted (ischemic stroke) or when blood vessels in the brain rupture (hemorrhagic stroke).
Even when the stroke is not fatal, it leaves scars, often for the rest of life. A person who has survived a stroke may have difficulty keeping their attention, have memory loss and even difficulty expressing themselves.
Fortunately, there are several warning signs of a stroke. If you experience any of these signs or are concerned about your state of health, call 112. Heart and Stroke Foundation advise against taking the car, transport by ambulance being safer.
If you see someone having a stroke, contact the emergency services and wait for paramedics to arrive. You can ask the person to lie down or help him to lie down. Also make sure his airways are not obstructed. The 112 operator will be able to help you.
