The Monthly Film FESTIVAL (Fesbul) has held the Fesbul Film Workshop: Passion, Roots, Movement in Solo, Central Java, which took place on March 1-3. In order to improve quality and creative expression, Fesbul with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) presents this inspiring forum for young filmmakers in Lokus 1 DIY & Central Java.
This event was a forum for 20 selected participants to further explore the world of film from various perspectives. The main focus of this year’s Fesbul Film Workshop is on the writing, directing and producing aspects of films, which are presented through intensive learning and direct interaction from experts in the field. Experts involved included John Badalu (producer), M. Reza Fahriansyah (writer), and Wahyu Agung Prasetyo (director), who acted as mentors during the event.
The Coordinator of Film, Animation, Video and Photography at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Imam Wuryanto, explained that the event aimed to guide filmmakers into the commercial realm. “Fesbul Film Workshops are held in various regions to provide opportunities for Indonesian filmmakers to express themselves and their work,” said Imam in a statement quoted on Wednesday (6/3).
The Fesbul Film Workshop lasts for three days. On the first day, participants presented their story ideas, followed by a presentation of material from the mentors. M. Reza Fahriansyah shared his knowledge about script writing, while Wahyu Agung Prasetyo discussed directing aspects, and John Badalu provided insight into film production.
The second day of the workshop continued with a One on One Mentoring session, where participants had the opportunity to consult directly with mentors about their future projects. Meanwhile, on the last day, the event was filled with Project Viewing, Discussion & Networking sessions, where participants could present their work and discuss possible collaborations in the future.
One of the mentors, John Badalu, said, “There are lots of stories that highlight local wisdom, this is interesting because the stories presented are very unique. My hope is that the participants in this workshop can realize their work and also build collaboration together to form a community even bigger,” said John.

The Fesbul Film Workshop provides an opportunity for two of the best future projects from all sectors to enter the commercial world and participate in the international film festival market in 2025.
This activity also presents a film screening program, which presents several works such as Basri & Salma in a Never-ending Comedy, Return with Calm, Tresna Signal, and Where The Wild Frangipanis Grow. This film screening not only provides inspiration, but also provides a platform to understand various creative approaches in filmmaking.
To continue this spirit, Fesbul is opening up opportunities for filmmakers in the Banten and West Java regions through the Open Submission Lokus 2 program. The submission period for works is from 2 to 12 March.
