2022 Postal Market Report: Slowdown in Delivery and Decline in Shipments

2023-06-13 09:35:45

The postal market experienced a slowdown in 2022, after two years of the coronavirus pandemic which had boosted demand for services. The turnover of the entire branch fell by 1.4% to reach 4.2 billion francs.

The number of shipments, all categories combined, fell by 4.3%, according to the annual report of the Federal Commission for La Poste (PostCom) published on Tuesday. In total, 2.9 billion parcels, letters or newspapers were delivered by La Poste or other service providers, compared to just over 3 billion the previous year.

The number of letters continued to decline, with 1.8 billion sent. Paradoxically, letter sales increased by 1.4%, a first for several years. This performance is due to the price increase implemented by La Poste.

At the same time, the parcel and courier market suffered from the decline in e-commerce, after a record year in 2021. The number of postal shipments in this sector fell by 3.2%.

Fewer post offices

On the universal service side, the report mentions 773 post offices and 1,254 postal agencies in 2022, for a total of 2,027 access points. These are 32 fewer post offices, against only three more agencies. On the other hand, slightly more households are served by a home service, i.e. a proportion of 10.6% (2021: 10.1%).

PostCom is pleased to see La Poste exceed the requirements in terms of delivery times for mail, whether for letters or parcels, priority or economy.

For the first time, La Poste also presented a report on the quality of the distribution of daily newspapers in subscriptions. La Poste is required to deliver them no later than 12:30 p.m. in regions without morning delivery. Here too, the legal requirements are largely fulfilled.
