China’s economy grows 4.8% in the first quarter amid warnings of “big challenges” ahead

The National Bureau of Statistics said China’s GDP growth was better than expected at 4.8 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, up from 4 percent in the final months of 2021.

Monday’s numbers came in higher than analysts’ expectations.
However, virus-related restrictions that included large cities in March put pressure on retail sales, leading to a rise in the unemployment rate.

While China saw a slight pickup in industrial growth earlier this year and spending was buoyed by the Lunar New Year holiday, movement restrictions were imposed in March that disrupted businesses and kept consumers at home.

Egypt: Life imprisonment for the acting Brotherhood guide

After the curtain came down on Mahmoud Ezzat’s trial for “breaking into the eastern borders”
Yesterday, the Egyptian Criminal Court sentenced Mahmoud Ezzat, the acting guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, to life imprisonment (25 years), in his retrial in the case known in the media as “breaking into the eastern borders.”
The facts of the case date back to 2011, during the events of January 25, when the Public Prosecution charged the convicts in the case with the charges of “agreeing with the Hamas Political Bureau, the leaders of the international Brotherhood organization, and the Lebanese Hezbollah to create a state of chaos to bring down the Egyptian state and its institutions, and to train members of Armed by the Iranian (Revolutionary Guard), to commit hostile and military actions inside the country, and to strike and storm Egyptian prisons.
The case includes 28 members of the group’s leaders, members of the “international organization” and members of the Palestinian “Hamas” movement and the Lebanese “Hezbollah”, led by Rashad Bayoumi, Mahmoud Ezzat, Muhammad Saad al-Katatni, Saad al-Hussaini, Muhammad Badi’, Muhammad al-Beltagy, Safwat Hegazy, Issam al-Arian and others.
The Court of Cassation passed the case file with final rulings on the others, as the verdict of the Court of Cassation issued in the case included the expiration of the criminal case once morest Essam El-Erian due to his death.

Security forces arrested Ezzat in August of last year, in an apartment in the Tagamoa area, east of Cairo.
