After the curtain came down on Mahmoud Ezzat’s trial for “breaking into the eastern borders”
Yesterday, the Egyptian Criminal Court sentenced Mahmoud Ezzat, the acting guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, to life imprisonment (25 years), in his retrial in the case known in the media as “breaking into the eastern borders.”
The facts of the case date back to 2011, during the events of January 25, when the Public Prosecution charged the convicts in the case with the charges of “agreeing with the Hamas Political Bureau, the leaders of the international Brotherhood organization, and the Lebanese Hezbollah to create a state of chaos to bring down the Egyptian state and its institutions, and to train members of Armed by the Iranian (Revolutionary Guard), to commit hostile and military actions inside the country, and to strike and storm Egyptian prisons.
The case includes 28 members of the group’s leaders, members of the “international organization” and members of the Palestinian “Hamas” movement and the Lebanese “Hezbollah”, led by Rashad Bayoumi, Mahmoud Ezzat, Muhammad Saad al-Katatni, Saad al-Hussaini, Muhammad Badi’, Muhammad al-Beltagy, Safwat Hegazy, Issam al-Arian and others.
The Court of Cassation passed the case file with final rulings on the others, as the verdict of the Court of Cassation issued in the case included the expiration of the criminal case once morest Essam El-Erian due to his death.
According to the investigations, the convicts “committed the murders of 32 prison security forces in Abu Zaabal prison, 14 prisoners of Wadi al-Natrun prison, and a prisoner of al-Marj prison, and smuggled regarding 20,000 prisoners from the three prisons mentioned, in addition to the kidnapping of 3 officers and a police officer among those charged.” Protecting the borders and forcibly taking them to the Gaza Strip.”
Security forces arrested Ezzat in August of last year, in an apartment in the Tagamoa area, east of Cairo.
The verdict issued once morest Ezzat yesterday is the third of its kind. In December 2021, he was also sentenced to life imprisonment for “committing espionage crimes with foreign organizations and bodies,” and he received the same sentence in April last year following being convicted of “terrorism.”
