The fan dialogues following the murderous attack once morest the police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis in Rentis are incredible. According to ELAS, the conversations prove that the purpose of the hooligans was to kill a police officer. The evidence of youth recruitment is revealing, with leading members providing them with free entry and gratuities.
A necessary condition for someone to become a member of the criminal organization was to have participated in at least one criminal act.
The ELAS announcement regarding the arrests for the Lyggeridis murder
Afraid of a possible arrest, the defendants appear as reflected in their conversations. The dialogue that follows is illustrative. They talk regarding the repeated visits of the police to the house of one of the alleged perpetrators of the murderous attack once morest the 31-year-old police officer. The dialogue following the murder of Lyggeridis is chilling.
The dialogue between the remand for throwing the deadly flare and his brother who has also been arrested, reveals the former’s concern regarding the possible video footage that can be found by the authorities and lead them to his trail. At the same time, it shows a person with specific clothing as the one who threw a Molotov cocktail right next to the already seriously injured Giorgos Lyggeridis.
In another dialogue, an arrested man talks to his friend. He fears that the gloves he wore during the attack, which he had taken care to burn, will be discovered.
Vassilis Kapernaros, lawyer of the family of G. Lyggeridis, speaking to ERTNews and the show Connections, stated: “All of Greece considers that this is the climax so that we say now or never, stop this army that is hostile to the Greek society”.
The recruitment
The structure of the alleged criminal organization is based on the soldiers, the “little ones” who, in order to rise in the hierarchy, become ruthless and particularly violent. A necessary condition for one of the “minors” to participate in illegal actions is that they have participated in at least one criminal act.
The vice-president of Olympiakos, Alexis Kougias, said: “Olympiakos fans were certified as committing acts of violence in 2019, it was the part of Olympiakos fans in a total of 1,200 fans that the then head of the Greek Police, Lefteris Oikonomou, gave them to the prosecutor of Areios Pagos, which had 1,200 fans, organized fans, of well-known associations throughout Greece, and of Olympiakos and PAOK and AEK and Panathinaikos and Areos and AEL”.
The fact that many of those arrested work or have worked in the past in the Municipality of Piraeus, prompted the response of the mayor of the city, Yiannis Moralis: “Contractual employees for a certain period of time are hired in the municipalities based on the applicable law and the procedure provided for by it. And in the cases mentioned in the publications, absolutely all the prescribed procedures were followed and despite the fact that it is known to the editors of the publications, it is deliberately ignored”.
The cynicism in the dialogues is unimaginable.
Friend: Well, okay, now he too, friend, goes to do his job and let’s say he was found dead…
Hooligan: Now, he’s having a dinner up there with Filopoulos and Michalis and Alkis, they’re all having dinner together.
They posted some of their dialogues on social media.
Hooligan: We killed a man
Friend: Are you not telling me now who are the strongest fans in Athens?
Hooligan: We m@@@@
The relatives of Michalis Filopoulos who was stabbed to death in 2007 in Peania and Michalis Katsouris who was murdered in New Philadelphia, hope that the abscess will finally break.
Andreas Filopoulos, father of the murdered Michalis, said: “They are colluding with someone. Someone tells them what to do. No tolerance. Laws exist. They are not executed.”
Giorgos Katsouris, brother of Michalis Katsouris, said: “In our case, they came down from Croatia, the police knew regarding it by some magical means, followed them and did not turn them back.”
Those arrested face a total of 28 charges, 12 of which are felonies.
Along with their criminal activity, the leading members of the organization managed to earn what are called in the language of the followers “daily wages”.
According to police sources, the members of the organization demanded sums of money of 20 or 50 euros in canteens that operate around the stadiums, while in case of refusal to pay the corresponding fee, they committed damages.
They also sold invitations to fans for matches at a price they set, with the excuse of boosting their “GATE”.
They placed themselves in control of the gates of the stadium, as a stewart, thus having the possibility to put fans in the stadium, for a price that they determined each time, depending on the importance of the match.
Supporters’ associations also sold t-shirts, calendars, stickers and even flares, while using social networking applications to ask for financial aid for legal costs to cover fans arrested for fan violence.
The professional profile of leadership
According to the same information, some of the leadership group are linked to labor relations both with the group and with another body, where they worked without going to work. It was only following the Rentis incident that they were now asked to go to work normally or request leave.
Typical is the case of a leading member who worked in a sports association of the team he supports, but the employment relationship with it was terminated on the day of the events in Rentis.
“Civil war for leadership”
Although they had killed a man, nothing scared them, they were even proud of it. Indicative of the power and financial benefit that existed for the leadership group, is that civil wars broke out even following the bloody episodes of Rentis, from rival groups of fans, over who will have the leadership, as recorded in a video uploaded on social media .
The identification of the perpetrators was led by a number of video materials from the broadcast of the volleyball match on December 7, from a number of shops and businesses from the surrounding streets and even from a “flashlight” that was handed over to the authorities by an unknown person following an anonymous phone call and left on February 18 , opposite gate 5 of the “Karaiskaki” stadium. Of course, the testimonies of protected witnesses also played an important role in the case.
In the disputed “flashlight” with 15 videos of the incidents in Rentis, the horseshoe where the organized fans were sitting, just before leaving the stadium, and then their movement, where, following the orders of two individuals, they leave to attack the police officers can be seen.
From the analysis reports of these video materials, combined with other elements of the preliminary investigation, where it emerged that: At half past six in the followingnoon of December 7, 35-40 people gathered outside the Karaiskaki stadium on motorcycles and cars. They gathered fuel from a nearby gas station and dynamite and loaded them into the cars. At a quarter past eight, they arrived in a convoy at the closed gym of Rentis “Melina Mercouri”. Two “team leaders” remained outside and were building the improvised bombs. After the 1st set the Chief who modified the plan gave the order and they went out at quarter past nine in the evening. They set up barricades and launched the attack on the policemen with the first throw that of the “Chief”.
