The Temporary Debates Commission of the National Electoral Institute (INE) profiled the journalists Javier Solórzano, Luisa Cantú and Elena Arcila as moderators for the third presidential debate of the 2023-2024 electoral process.

The proposal was approved unanimously at the Temporary Debates Commission and will have to be submitted to the General Council in a session next Thursday, April 18.

It will be the first time that a debate has three moderators, because each of them will represent each of the three regions into which the country was divided: north, center and south.

“The agreement was made in the General Council that the moderators must come from the three regions into which the country was divided,” explained counselor Carla Humphrey.

Despite the fact that the proposal was endorsed in previous meetings at the tables of advisors and candidate representatives, the PRI representative before the Commission, Iván Quirarte, asked to replace Arcila with the journalist Mario Campos.

“We consider it appropriate to request that the communicator Elena Arcila be considered, since we consider that her profile is vast and she has the necessary and suitable elements to be the moderator of the Yucatan area, so to speak, given the background that it has in that area, we consider it appropriate that Mario Campos can be considered as that person who takes the role of moderator of that area, since he meets the area requirement and has a greater profile and presence at the national level,” explained the representative of the PRI.

In response, counselor Carla Humphrey, president of the Temporary Debates Commission, rejected the approach and explained that the decision was already made after analyzing several proposals and having various debates, between the representatives of the three candidates and the electoral counselors, on Who should be the moderators?

“It is a decision that the electoral councilors value and weigh for several hours,” said the counselor.

In addition, Quirarte asked to know which profiles were left out during the deliberation, but Humphrey said that the agreement was to keep that information confidential.
