Between April and June 2023, according to a census by asset manager Janus Henderson, the world’s 1,200 largest publicly traded companies returned $568.1 billion in dividends to their shareholders, a jump of 4.9%. compared to the same period in 2022.

France is doing even better than this global trend: Janus Henderson estimates the amount of dividends paid to shareholders by the major CAC 40 groups at 49.5 billion dollars (about 46 billion euros): a record for the country.

France, a third of the share of European dividends

Dividends in France have thus increased by 13.3% compared to 2022, and their share represents almost a third of the total dividends paid in Europe (30%). BNP Paribas, Sanofi, Axa, LVMH and Engie, whose dividends rose by two-thirds, were the main redistributors in the second quarter, and are all in the top 20 worldwide. Also according to Janus Henderson’s study, banks were “the main engine” of dividend growth, in Europe as in the world, followed by the automobile industry in Europe.

France performs a “good” performance, placing itself ahead of other major economies such as Germany (+9.6%) or Italy (+9.4%), but it is Spain that ranks first in terms of growth in dividends paid in Europe, with an increase of nearly 33%.

A trend driven by the finance and automotive sectors

According to the newspaper The echoes, on the podium of the biggest announced profits of 2023, Stellantis comes first: the car manufacturer has garnered more than 11 billion euros in the first six months of the year. The oil company TotalEnergies comes in second place with 9 million euros in profits and LVMH joins them with 8.5 billion euros.

The auto sector alone in France represents 14 billion in profits, but the financial giants (BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Axa, Crédit Agricole) even exceed the profits made in the luxury sector.

In 2022, companies in the CAC 40 had reaped record profitswith more than 142 billion euros in profits thanks to luxury and energy records.

For the first half of 2023, 38 of the 40 major shareholders listed on the Paris Stock Exchange have already generated 81 billion euros in profits, with an increase of 7%. While this upward trend in the first half of the year nevertheless stalled in the face of previous post-Covid increases (+ 25% in 2021), the asset manager’s forecasts nevertheless remain very optimistic on the dividend forecasts of the upcoming second semester.
