2023 Ally ACC Women’s Soccer Tournament: Pitt Women’s Soccer Faces No. 3 North Carolina in First Round Matchup

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women’s soccer team (13-4-1, 6-2-1 ACC) is set to meet host No. 3 – ranked North Carolina (10-0-8, 5-0-5 ACC) in a 2023 Ally ACC Women’s Soccer Tournament First Round matchup on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, NC. The contest will air live on ACC Network.

The winner of the matchup between fifth seed Panthers and fourth seed Tar Heels will face first seed Florida State in the tournament semifinals on Nov. 2 at WakeMed Park.

THE SERIES

This will be the eighth time the Panthers have faced the Tar Heels with North Carolina holding the 6-0 edge.
Last time out, Pitt met the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill with North Carolina taking the 4-0 win.
The Panthers are looking to capitalize on their success from the regular season and continue to the semifinals of the ACC Championships for the first time in program history.

SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS

North Carolina finished the regular season with a 1-1 draw against Boston College Thursday evening in Newton, Massachusetts. 
The Tar Heels outshot the Boston College 21-3 with 12-2 shots on goal. Bella Sember produced five shots with four on target.
Isabel Cox hit her 105th game played which leads all active Division I players – finding herself in the top-10 all-time records of NCAA Division I history.
The Tar Heels have out shot their opponents 38-12 this season – securing 108 points total.
North Carolina has defeated four top-25 ranked opponents this season and tied four as well.
The Tar Heels completed their regular season without a loss for the first time since 2004.

RECAPPING THE SEASON FINALE WIN

The No. 20 Pitt women’s soccer team closed out their regular season schedule with a 2-1 win against the Virginia Tech Hokies, Thursday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. 
Starting the evening off strong, the Panthers posted four shots in the first 16 minutes – setting the scene for the evening’s contest.
At the 17th minute, Landy Mertz put Pitt on the board first after a double assist from Amanda West and Keera Melenhorst.
Pitt continued to dominate the field in the first half – posting a total of 12 shots with six on target. The Panthers were able to hold 62% of the possession in the first 45-minutes of play and headed into the locker room up 1-0.
Sophomore Katie Zailski posted an incredible team save at the net in the 62nd minute – keeping the Hokies still scoreless.
Samiah Phiri was able to double the Panther’s lead in the 75th minute of play – finding a opening in the back of the net off of Ellie Coffield’s assist.
Just under 10 minutes later, Virginia Tech was able to secure their only goal of the night.
Pitt didn’t just dominate tonight’s game in points. The Panthers held the edge in shots (23-17), shots on goal (9-4), and corner kicks (10-6).

The Panthers completed the regular season contest undefeated at Ambrose Urbanic field, 8-0-1, setting a new home winning record.
With Thursday’s win, Pitt has secured the program record for most ACC wins in a single season (6).
Pitt tacked on two goals against Virginia Tech – posting a new program record for goals secured in a single season (49).
