View of the first downhill training

In Beaver Creek, Colorado, the first training for the downhill races started on Tuesday with an impressive performance show. The Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Source showed again why he is considered one of the best downhill skiers. With an outstanding best time, which he achieved especially in the first sections of the route, he moved to the front of the field. The Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazinwho is back in top shape after recovering from back problems, followed closely on his heels and achieved second place with a minimal gap of 23 hundredths of a second.

Andreas Sander from Germany also showed a strong performance and achieved the third fastest time, closely followed by the Italian Mattia Cassewhich particularly shone in the later sections of the route. Dominik Paris from Italy, who is not usually one of the favorites on this slope, surprised with a solid ride and finished the training 1.61 seconds behind Kilde.

Also notable were the achievements of Cameron Alexander and Adrian Smiseth Sejersted, who lined up directly behind Casse. The Swiss Marco OdermattHowever, who had to settle for 11th place, showed section times that could indicate a strong performance in the actual race. His compatriot Stephen Rogentin was just behind him.

For Daniel Hemetsberger, the best Austrian in training, it was a day with mixed feelings. He took 14th place, while other Austrian skiers like Vincent Kriechmayr and Marco Schwarz ended up further back in the field.

Further training is planned for Wednesday and Thursday, followed by two downhill races and concluding with a Super-G. The tension is rising as Beaver Creek hasn’t seen an Austrian winner for several years and Source and Odermatt line up as the men to beat.

December 1st is more than just fun in Beaver Creek. This year there will be two downhill runs on the Raubvogel slope on Friday and Saturday and a Super-G on Sunday. The speed specialists are therefore more than just in demand in the USA.

With a start at 3,483 meters and a finish at 2,730 meters, the Birds of Prey downhill course in Beaver Creek, a venue for ski World Cup heroes since it opened in 1997, challenges athletes over a 753-meter elevation gain.

‘The Flyaway’ serves as a quick entry ramp before ‘The Brink’, with its steep gradient, requires an immediate switch to high speed technology. Corners like ‘The Talon’ and ‘Pete’s Arena’ require skillful carving, while ‘Russi’s Ride’ takes skiers to ‘The Abyss’, a notorious speed-restricting section.

The jumps – ‘Peregrine’, ‘Goshawk’, ‘Screech Owl’, ‘Golden Eagle’, ‘Harrier’ and the final ‘Red Tail’ – promise adrenaline and technical challenges.

Svindal’s spectacular 2007 crash and triumphant return illustrate the drama and challenges of this track, which made history in 2021 by hosting four speed events over four consecutive days.
