Among seniors aged 65 to 79 who have passed the legal retirement age (60), more than half expressed a desire to continue working. One in five people in this age group has looked for a job in the past year.

According to the Korea Employment Information Service on the 3rd, in a supplementary survey of the elderly to the Economically Active Population Survey conducted by Statistics Korea in May, the proportion of people aged 65 to 79 who wish to ‘continue working’ was 55.7%. This ratio increased by 0.9 percentage points from the survey in May last year (54.8%). It increased by 12.1 percentage points compared to 10 years ago in 2013 (43.6%).

By gender, men (65.4%) wanted to continue working more than women (47.3%). The more educated people were, the more they wanted to continue working. The most common reason for wanting to continue working was ‘because it helps with living expenses/because I need money’ (52.2%), and ‘because I want to work as long as my health allows/because of the joy of working’ (38%).

The proportion of people aged 65 to 79 who had job search experience in the past year was 18.6% as of last May. It decreased slightly compared to last year (19.2%), but increased significantly compared to 10 years ago in 2013 (11.7%). 18.9% of men and 18.4% of women had experience looking for a job.

The number of older people who want to work is increasing, but the relatively poor working environment for the elderly is considered a problem. According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s ‘2022 Labor Status Survey by Employment Type’, the total monthly working hours of non-regular workers aged 60 or older was 114.6 hours, which was more than that of all non-regular workers (111.7 hours). However, the total hourly wage was 16,575 won, which was lower than that of all non-regular workers (17,233 won), the report explained.
