2023 Sugar Campaign Comes to an Early End: Impact of Weather and Cane Supply on Gardel SA

We must stop the costs, according to Iguacanne and the sugar factory of Moule. Cane growers and harvesting operators have failed in recent days to deliver enough cane to Gardel to justify a postponement of the end of the 2023 campaign. The balance of the site will therefore close tomorrow/Tuesday, at noon. The end of the harvest was initially scheduled for August 14.

The balance of the Basse-Terre BERON platform will close tonight, 08/14/2023. The GARDEL Le Moule scale will close tomorrow, 08/15/2023 at noon.

These are the terms of the press release co-signed, this Monday afternoon (August 14), by Bruno Wachter, president of Iguacane (Guadeloupean interprofession for sugar cane) and Nicolas Philippot, deputy general manager of Gardel SA.

Thus, sugar cane planters and logging operators did not obtain the expected postponement of the end of the 2023 sugar campaign, in accordance with the request they had made to the interprofession on August 4 last.

The wish of these professionals was to mitigate the impact of the recurring bad weather suffered since June. They wanted to harvest as many canes as possible. Wet soils have slowed down operations considerably; several machine breakdowns were even to be deplored, in particular in the North of Grande-Terre, according to the producers.

Initially, L’Iguacanne had consented to this postponement, specifying that the final decision would rest with the Gardel factory; the date of August 19 was then mentioned.

In the end, the two interlocutors are unanimous:

GARDEL has no other choice, economically and materially (quality of the canes, difficulty of extraction), but to stop the sugar campaign and to prepare from now on for the preparation of the following campaign, so that it starts as soon as possible. time.

Joint press release from Iguacanne and Gardel SA – 08/14/2023.

The postponement of Gardel’s closure would have been accepted, on the condition that the plant be supplied with a minimum of 4,000 tonnes/day. Condition accepted by the operators, during the liaison committee of August 8th.

But this objective was not achieved:

Another argument put forward by Gardel and Iguacanne, to justify the end of the campaign: the saccharine richness of production is gradually falling and is now below 6.5 points; the cane loses its value over the days.

In the end, the initial forecast of 405,000 tonnes of cane cut and delivered to the Moule sugar refinery has almost been reached, according to the assessment made today.
