The Swiss benefited rather well from cinemas in 2023. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), more than 10 million admissions were recorded during the year, which is equivalent to an increase in attendance by 20% compared to 2022. This figure still remains 16% lower than the figures observed in 2019, just before the coronavirus pandemic.

Cinema fans were able to view an entire catalog composed, among other things, of 436 new films in 2023, compared to 449 in 2022. Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer sit among the most watched films of the year.

Theaters most often showed European films (48%), followed by American films (24%). Although the latter were fewer in number, they nevertheless generated more screenings (60% of the entire catalog) and recorded more than 6.8 million entries. Swiss films, for their part, represented only 6% of films offered on demand: an increase of 1 percentage point compared to 2022.
