SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS, RD.- The center specialized in reproductive medicine, Fertility Team SFM and Advanced Gynecology, carried out in August a series of six innovative procedures that mark a milestone in the Duarte province, Northeast region and the country.
The procedures of scientific advances in reproductive medicine are: Conventional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF); Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI); Sperm and Embryo Cryopreservation; Testicular Biopsy; Sperm Fragmentation Test and Determination of Reactive Oxygen Species in Spermatozoa.
Dr. Odalis Hernández, president of the specialized center, explained that these procedures are possible thanks to its modern laboratory, which was inaugurated on May 19 of this year.
The Obstetrician Gynecologist and specialist in reproductive medicine explained each of the procedures among which 25 eggs were obtained, representing 25 possible babies.
Hernández explained that with Conventional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) several processes were carried out. He highlighted that for the first time in the history of this region, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) was applied, this advanced procedure injects a sperm directly into an egg.
Another important milestone was that the first cryopreservation of sperm and embryos were carried out, in which sperm and embryos have been frozen.
Dr. Hernández said that “another procedure never before performed in a health center in this demarcation was the Testicular Biopsy: which consisted of extracting sperm from a man who had been between 12 and 14 years without the presence of sperm.”
He also explained what the Sperm Fragmentation Test consisted of: which is used to evaluate sperm quality and the Determination of Reactive Oxygen Species in Spermatozoa, a specialized procedure that, according to the doctor, is not performed anywhere else in the country and evaluates the influence of oxidizing substances on a spermatozoon.
