The symptom of a sick country? The Parisian Georges Pompidou hospital launched a call for donations this Thursday to finalize the purchase of a photon counting scanner, a cutting-edge medical imaging device, reports the HuffPost.
“At the end of the year, we are appealing to your generosity,” the Parisian hospital said on X (formerly Twitter), describing the coveted scanner as “revolutionary”. This process of calling for donations is, in itself, nothing new, and had already been used several times during the Covid-19 crisis. The AP-HP even has a page dedicated to donations on its website.

Public health in deficit
But the need for the public hospital to appeal to the generosity of the French has been denounced by several elected officials, criticizing the management of Social Security, public finances or government policy. The deputies particularly noted the “ubiquitous” situation following the difficult vote on the Social Security financing bill (PLFSS) this year, marked by the use of numerous 49-3 votes.

Yannick Neuder, MP (LR) for Isère and professional doctor, recalled that “50% of our hospitals, 40% of our private clinics and 60% of our EHPADs are in deficit”. Far-right elected official Nicolas Meizonnet saw this call for donations as a symbol of poor management of public money, with “billions of euros […] thrown out of windows by those who govern us.”
On the side of France Insoumise, Carlos Martens Bilongo made a link between the lack of money in hospitals and the increasing budget of the army. “While Macron is force-feeding his friends, exempting the rich from taxes, the public hospital, the heritage of those who do not have one, is in ruins,” wrote his colleague Thomas Portes.
